Open Data Journalism for Change

Since 2011 when LA NACION Data was launched as an open data journalism initiative, its strategy has been the same: to do data journalism AND to open data. The vision we have is that each set of data that is published means that more knowledge is released.

The first step to make datasets famous is to become open data USERS, helping not only journalism but other citizens to do the same.

And if there is no open data, no problem, as we need to become PRODUCERS of the transformed from closed formats to open data. We have to find and convert public information, so we file FOIA requests, we use more than 8 OCR Engines combined with processes that automatize the feed from that close PDF to a dataset passing adding rows in a database per month or daily, and we even type that and open data in special productions repeating our data civic marathons.

Not only products and services but actions, we assist to every launch of a data portal this year eg: Agriculture, Judicial, Energy and Mining  Agencies and the National data portal.

Opening data as PRODUCERS all with Open Data to Download:

Gasoline: more than  2,6MM rows data from 2004 to 2016 on monthly prices and volume of Gasoline sells in all Argentine´s gas stations allowed us to tell national, regional and hiperlocal stories on a controversial topic in our economy that crossed different governments during the last years.

Nisman Audios  (200 audios of phone interceptions filtered and classified from the original dataset of 40,000,a with detailed information about people including biographies, topics with explanations, highlighted text, timestamps of most important parts inside the conversations).

The  Bills Tracker – from PDF files scraped since 2003 from the Central Bank we  built a dataset from scratch to measure the amount of bills of 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and now 500  pesos, in a crisis of inflation denied by the former government, and a corruption case involving vice president and the “machine of printing bills”.

The RANKINGS Platform: we developed a platform and open data from dankings that we find are reusable or sustain our stories. Our “Argentina in the World” section gathers 24 embeddable rankings for others to reuse. Eg. CPI from Transparency Intl,  PISA from OCDE, etc.

Opening data From Print Copies using FOI Decree: a dataset of letters to the president Cristina Kirchner in 2015 (37,000)  versus Mauricio Macri in 2016 (24,000).

OPEN DATA as USERS

BS AS Public Bike System: more than 4MM rows of data notmalized and analyzed, downloaded from Citi of buenos Aires data portal

BS AS CITY CLAIMS per Zone Dataset: comparing different governors in City of Buenos Aires through it´s citizen claims, more tha 700,000 rows analyzed  and a project around green containers.

Exotic trees in Buenos Aires: from open data to infograph.

And we continue to update our platforms: OPEN DATA CATALOG, DAILY “DATA READY” SERIES, CONGRESOSCOPE,  OPEN DECLARATION OF ASSETS,  SUBSIDIES OF BUS Transportation and DATAFEST Event.

CONGRESOSCOPIO: opening legislative activity data from PDFs, during 2015 from Congress and in 2016 we inaugurated Senate information. More than 90.000 rows.

OPEN DECLARATION OF ASSETS FROM PUBLIC SERVANTS: manually updated dataset that feeds an application. This three year project evolved and opened the source, the data and the process of our work. In 2016 we added 1000 more declarations so now we have more than 250

SUBSIDIES OF BUS TRANSPORTATION System in Argentina 2005-2017. We scrape, transform, build this dataset update it every 3 months and open it. 281.000 rows

OPEN DATA CATALOG: the only media in Argentina using and producing datasets in an Open Data Platform Junar. Our medium size datasets are available to download in CSV, are embeddable or accessible via an API

DAILY “DATA READY” SERIES: reusable for giving context and illustrating with series of data like inflation (CPI), dollar price, Central Bank reserves in U$D, automobile industry monthly sales, real estate housing market registered. Etc.
