After the immigration ban of Donald Trump, LA NACIÓN Data searched for data evidencing if the measure taken by the new President was supported or not by the information produced on said country as regards the flow of refugees admitted in the United States from 2001 to 2016, the religion of the refugees admitted in said country from 2002 as regards the religion of the country and the number of the persons who committed terrorist attacks in the United States.
To write this article, the team worked with five databases.
Data of refugees
We first downloaded the Report of Admissions and Arrivals from the Refugee Processing Center website:
The State Department of the United States uploads the information separate per year, in different spreadsheets, so we created a new file with three columns: year of arrival, country in Spanish and number of admissions.
After this table was created, we analyzed data: we made a ranking of countries with more admissions of refugees in the United States and then we analyzed the number of admissions of refugees from the seven countries included in the Trump’s immigration ban:
Thus, according to the data provided by the Refugees Processing Center website, most of the refugees admitted by United States between 2001 and 2016 arrived from Myanmar (166.693), followed by two of the seven countries included in the Trump’s immigration ban: Iraq (142.967) and Somalia (105.881). From these seven countries, Libya is the country where less refugees arrived between those years: 17. As regards Syria, there was a peak of requests to enter the country in the last two years, in view of the worsening of life conditions in the country: 1.682 admissions in 2015 and 16.153 in 2016. It was the largest second group that entered the country last year, after the Democratic Republic of Congo (21.549).
During President George W. Bush administration (2000 – 2009), that, after the attacks of 2001 discontinued the admission of refugees for two months to make requirements stricter, 381.802 persons entered the country under said status. During President Barack Obama administration (2009 – 2017), 583.138 persons entered the United States.
To view these data, it was used Tableau that displayed the evolution of the admissions per country with a line marking the end of the administration of President George Bush and the beginning of the administration of President Barack Obama.
The religion of the countries banned by Trump
We analyzed the religion of the seven countries banned by Trump. To do this, we entered the Interactive Reporting of the Refugee Processing Center website and we consulted its database.
We downloaded the information regarding the religion of those persons who entered the United States and we intertwined said information with the total amount of arrivals. Then, we made a comparison of the visualization displaying the religion of the seven countries banned by Trump with the total population of said country.
The analysis showed that, although the seven countries affected by the ban are, effectively, mostly Muslims (this religion represents approximately 90 to 98% of the population), the universe of refugees who arrived from said countries to United States shows other proportions, according to the data provided by the Refugee Processing Center website between 2001 and 2016.
In Iran, for example, where 99.5% of population is Muslin and 0.2% is Christian, 51.1% of 46.547 citizens who sought refuge in the United States are Christians (mostly are Protestants) and only 4.9% are Muslims. The second religion among the persons seeking refuge is Bahaism (23.5%). In Iraq, less than 1% of population is Christian, and, among the Iraqi refugees, said percentage increases to 33, and in Sudan said figure goes from 5.4% to a 46.7% among those seeking refuge.
In Syria, Libya and Somalia, the impressive Muslim majority repeats in their countries and among refugees arriving to United States. This has provoked criticism to former President Obama, given the persecution suffered by Christians and Yezidis by the Islamic State. This group represents less than 2% of the Syrian refugees in the United States.
The origin of terrorists
From the database that we exported, made by the New America organization, it may be seen that none of the 12 attacks resulting in death from September 11, 2001 was committed by citizens or descendants of citizens from these countries. Data point out that from a total amount of 396 persons related to Jihadism in the United States -from murders to funds sent to terrorist cells- almost half (189) were born in that country and 32% had citizenship or residence in the United States. Only 3.8% from that total amount were refugees.

Visas
Finally, we downloaded the information from the State Department referred to Immigration Visas given per country as from 2007.
We made a ranking of countries per immigration visas given, a ranking of immigration Visas given per year and a ranking of immigration Visas in those seven countries banned by Trump.
The Department of Homeland Security publishes the data of the authorization for residence given to four of the seven countries affected by the immigration ban, in view of the absence of an Embassy in the other three. In the last ten year (2007 – 2016), 19.861 immigration Visas were given in Iraq; 19.806 in Yemen, 8.841 in Syria (until 2012, when the Embassy was closed) and 2.242 in Sudan (since 2015). In total, there are 50.750 citizens with the possibility of living in the United States. If Trump decree is applied once again and these people leave the country, their return will be in doubt during, at least, three months.
Between 2007 and 2016, the persons who received more immigration Visas were the Mexican citizens (730.483), Dominican Republic (365.619) and China (360.322). Argentina appears in the 85th place, 4.882 Visas were given during said decade.
Between 2006 and 2015, non-immigration Visas (for temporary residence) were given to 88.353 citizens of four of the seven countries. These are: Iraq (46.405), Yemen (15.154), Sudan (14.063) and Libya (12.731 until 2014), according to the data published by the American government.
