2017 Elections: who enters and who is left out of the new Congress?

This interactive display shows the conformation of the Chambers of Deputies and Senators in real time during the night of the legislative elections of 2017.

Not only allows to see how the chamber of the cameras will be composed, readers can find which candidates enter and which do not for each province.

LA NACION was the only news website that had the candidates lists from all over the country, obtained after opening all the pdfs published by the National Electoral Chamber.

We wanted this project to be really federal, so we included the photo of all the candidates all over the country, so our readers could identify their local people.

Another important fact is that we were the only ones to show live, during the night of the Elections, the name and surname of the candidates who obtained a seat.

Several news channels published our production that night and the day after.

The visualization was inserted in a note that got almost 700,000 pageviews and an average stay in note of more than almost 3 minutes.

We also replicate all the information in our print edition with a wide display in two complete sheets.

How we did it?

The first was to build a large database with the candidates for deputies and senators for each province and each party. We did this by opening hundreds of pdf files published by the National Electoral Chamber.

Then we designed a visualization where the banks imitate the positions within the Congress, for print and online edition.

The interactive one includes several features such as:
– Compare with the current Congress
– Compare with the primary elections
– Filter by province to know the candidates who obtained a bank

We used: D3, jquery, python.
