Jeff Beck, a toda orquesta
Jeff Beck es uno de los grandes genios de la guitarra que ha dado el rock, aunque su ego desmedido le impidió brillar en agrupaciones y rápidamente se transformó en un nombre propio (los guitarristas que compartieron espacio en los Yardbirds pueden dar crédito de esto).
Su eclecticismo y su búsqueda no siempre dieron grandes resultados. Tiene discos geniales (Truth, Blow by Blow, entre otros) y también algunos que no reflejan su enorme talento.
Este viejo Beck del siglo XXI, que mantiene el mismo peinado de antaño, sabe rodearse de sesionistas de lujo y jóvenes genios de sus instrumentos. Siete años después de Jeff, ese muy buen álbum de 2003, Beck llega con Emotion & Commotion, una obra por momentos lánguida, despareja, con algunos abusos de producción y de orquestaciones, aunque en cierta forma vinculados con la inquietud del artista por la música clásica.
De entrada, inspirado en Jeff Buckley, una particular interpretación de Cropus Christi Carol, de Benjamin Britten, uno de los más prestigiosos compositores ingleses de música de cámara. Dos minutos de suaves orquestaciones que preceden al wah-wah introductorio del rabioso riff de Harmerhead, uno de los pocos temas propios del disco (que el tecladista Jason Rebello escribió pensando en Jan Hammer, de allí el nombre), apoyado en una base de sexo nada débil: la italiana Alessia Mattalia en los tambores y la irresistible prodigio australiana Tal Wilkenfeld en el bajo (desde hace tiempo, compañera del tío Jeff en las presentaciones en vivo). Never Alone es una pieza de Rebello (Vinnie Colaiuta está a cargo de la batería), atmosférica y con ampulosa orquestación, y vuelve a caer en la introspección con Over The Rainbow, de Harold Arden y Yip Harburg. Por suerte, aparece el blues, con I Put a Spell On You, el clásico de Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, en la voz de Joss Stone y con otra base de lujo: el baterista Clive Deamer (integrante de una de las tantas formaciones de los legendarios Hawkwind) y el bajista galés con nombre de actor porno Pino Palladino (una garantía entre los sesionistas); un homenaje de Beck a los años 50.
Casi un chill-out con la Wilkenfeld bien al frente, Serene posee mínimas pinceladas vocales de la inglesa Olivia Safe. Otro acercamiento a Buckley es el delicado Lilac Wine, con la sirena irlandesa Imelda May a cargo del susurro y un altísimo y sutil solo de Beck.

There’s No Other Me es el otro capítulo en el que aporta Joss Stone, con un ambiente que se va magnificando hasta lograr un clímax perfecto que… agoniza en un inexplicable fade. Un desperdicio terminarlo de esa manera, cuando despegaba un solo criminal de Jeff.
Cierra con Elegy For Dunkirk, una pieza –sugerida por Steve Lipson, uno de los productores junto con Trevor Horn– del italiano Dario Marianelli, un experto en soundtracks.
